El de Basilea persigue su 90º título profesional en su final 138, el 25º de categoría Masters 1.000 ATP. A sus 35 años sigue fortaleciendo su posición de número uno de la temporada en marcha. En el ranking mundial es décimo, aunque este resultado en el desierto californiano le asegura ya subir hasta la séptima plaza, que mejorará si bate a su compatriota de Lausana.
Y vuelve a luchar por la corona en Indian Wells, que ha conquistado cuatro veces aunque de 2004 a 2006 y en 2012. Fue feudo de Novak Djokovic las tres ediciones anteriores, con victoria incluida sobre Federer en 2015.
Roger domina 19-3 el historial con Stan Wawrinka, 31 años, tercero del mundo y que disputa su primera final en Indian Wells. Ya se vieron las caras en las ‘semis’ del Open de Australia, con éxito Federer por 7-5, 6-3, 1-6, 4-6 y 6-3.
