La Antártida se encuentra en pleno invierno y la falta de luz natural dificulta el seguimiento de fenómenos como la fragmentación a la barrera o plataforma Larsen C, en la península Antártica. No obstante, los equipos instalados en satélites como el Sentinel-1 y el Landsat-8 permiten a los expertos del proyecto MIDAS y de la NASA mantener vigilado al que podría convertirse en el iceberg de mayores dimensiones observado hasta ahora por los científicos.
Los investigadores de la iniciativa británica MIDAS (Melt on Ice Shelf Dynamics and Stability) difundieron nuevos datos e imágenes sobre esta enorme masa de hielo que está a punto de desprenderse de la plataforma Larsen C. Según los últimos datos provisionales, tras la ruptura el bloque podría tener una superficie cercana a los 3.500 kilómetros cuadrados, más de 15 veces el tamaño de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires.
”En otra señal de que la formación del iceberg es inminente, se observó que la grieta de la plataforma de hielo Larsen C creció a una velocidad de más de 10 metros por día entre el 24 y 27 de junio de 2017”, indican Martin O’Leary y Adrian Luckman en el apunte del blog del proyecto MIDAS publicado el 28 de junio.
Las observaciones del 27 de junio no cubren la punta de la grieta, pero una imagen Sentinel-1 de baja resolución, captada poco después de la medianoche del 28 de junio, muestra claramente que el gigantesco iceberg permanece unido a la plataforma de hielo en su extremo occidental. “El iceberg permanece unido a la plataforma de hielo pero su extremo se está moviendo a la velocidad más alta jamás registrada en esta plataforma de hielo. Aún no podemos decir cuándo ocurrirá la ruptura, podría ser cuestión de horas, días o semanas”, indican los científicos británicos que participan de la investigación. En el parte del 30 de junio , la tendencia se profundizó: “El hielo restante se acerca al punto de ruptura mientras el iceberg de Larsen C se mueve cada vez más rápido hacia el desprendimiento”.
Por su parte, el Earth Observatory de la NASA indicó que el Sensor Térmico Infrarrojo (TIRS) del satélite Landsat-8 capturó una imagen de la grieta el 17 de junio pasado que muestra un evidente aumento de la temperatura del hielo y del agua en la zona de la plataforma Larsen C donde se está desarrollando el inminente desprendimiento.
